Mittens for Cold Hands

Spun is working with Andrea Brush’s Ypsilanti-based group Mittens for Cold Hands, with the goal of creating 200 pairs of mittens for the men of the Detroit Rescue Mission by Christmas Eve, 2016. The mittens will be distributed as part of gift bags containing hygiene items such as deodorant and toothpaste, other small items such as hats and socks, and some Christmas treats.

Why mittens?
Since shelters are often only available at night, people are left to fend for themselves during the day. We feel the cold first in our hands and feet, and a warm pair of mittens can help.

Why handmade?
A handmade item forges a personal connection between recipient and crafter: it is why we make things. The recipient knows someone has taken the time to craft something useful and beautiful for them. The crafter is given the time and opportunity to hold the recipient in their thoughts as they work.

Why wool?
Wool is naturally warm, breathable, and water resistant. It can hold 30 percent of its weight in water and still feel dry.

How can you get involved?
Stop by the shop during Spun’s store hours, and let us know you’re interested. We will give you the necessary bulky yarn (Cestari’s Mount Vernon, Bulky, while supplies last!) and a copy of Andrea’s mitten pattern. When you’ve finished your mittens, return them to Spun, and we will get them where they need to go! Simple.

Spun will also be hosting a KAL for mitten makers on the first Sunday of every month, from 11am to 1pm, beginning in April. This will give us all a chance to meet each other and help each other out.

A few more details:
You can knit or crochet mittens using your own pattern, from your own stash, and donate those as well, but please note that your yarn must be 100 percent wool or a primarily wool blend.

• Please only donate new, handmade mittens!
• Spun will not be accepting stash donations from customers.
• Please plan on winding your yarn yourself if possible. If you’d like your yarn wound at Spun, please understand that we might ask you to come back and pick it up later. You can also call a day ahead of time and let us know you’re coming.

Please contact the shop with any questions (734-780-7867)! We look forward to seeing you soon.
