Knitspiration Hat (3 hours)
Saturday, May 11, 12-3 • $56.50
Teacher: Melynda Bernardi
Do you find yourself dreaming up designs that seem to stay in your head, waiting to be knit up? In this class, we’ll look into the process of turning design ideas into handknits. Designer Melynda Bernardi will take you through the design process from concept to completion. Come with the skills you have--knitting and purling, cabling, lacework, colorwork: Your personal skill level will dictate how involved your design will be. Using a design template, you’ll explore essential pattern details so you have the confidence to take your idea to a finished handknit.
Please note that the pattern and template will be sent to you a week before class so that you (or your helper/designer) may work on the design before class if you so choose. With Melynda’s guidance, you’ll translate your ideas into stitches as you enjoy an afternoon of learning and knitting.
About the pattern: The Knitspiration Hat was born out of the desire to create one-of-a-kind teacher gifts. Designer Melynda Bernardi created a hat template that would allow her children to design gifts specifically for their teachers. The original idea is that a child “designs” the hat, and then the knitter turns the child’s picture into a handknit gift. The possibilities are endless!
Pre-requisites: Participants should be familiar with the following: long-tail cast-on, knitting, purling, and knitting in the round.
Homework (optional): Use the template Melynda provides to design your hat (or have someone else design your hat).

About Melynda Bernardi: Growing up, Melynda never found a wardrobe problem that could not be solved with some fabric, a needle, and thread. This early proficiency eventually led to teaching herself knitting in college, as a way to keep her ever-creating hands busy. A few years later, when the day to day stresses of a job pressed in, her creative needs burst forth onto the internet as French Press Knits.
Now, Melynda takes great pleasure in sharing her love of knitting with others. Whether teaching or designing, learning new techniques or writing about her crafting exploits, she has enjoyed finding her place in the knitting community. Her love of efficiency is reflected in her patterns and projects, where she strives to design for a variety of knitters- young and old, novice to experienced.
Melynda has found a new joy in life as she embarks on the wonderful (and sometimes crazy) journey of motherhood. This may explain why most recent projects flying off her needles have been of the smaller variety, and why new designs seem to be geared toward the little ones who don’t always appreciate a hand knit garment. This knitter, wife, and mom creates and designs from her home in Michigan, where her hand knits get plenty of use.
