Across the US, black dogs and cats are the last
to be adopted and the first to be euthanized.
Several factors may be acting on the subconscious of potential adopters: black pets are more difficult to photograph in dimly lit shelters; black cats are traditionally associated with bad luck, black dogs with depression and the underworld.
What to do?
Well, if you’re Alex Tinsley, you combine several passions (dogs! design! fiber!) and create a collection specifically to benefit this often neglected population. Alex’s Knit It Black is a group of chic, wearable black or nearly black knits at a variety of skill levels.
It’s metaphorically sound! It’s a perennial wardrobe classic! It goes with everything! It’s flattering! Bonus: If you adopt a black pet, he or she will match your new outfit!
How does all this work?
During Alex’s reception (December 16, 5-7PM), and her trunk show (December 16-22), purchase one or all of the patterns in Alex’s Knit It Black collection, along with sufficient yarn (it doesn’t have to be black!) to make at least one of the knits in the collection, and Spun will donate 10 percent of yarn proceeds and 80 percent of pattern proceeds to the Humane Society of Huron Valley!
Why the HSHV?
The Humane Society of Huron Valley provides an invaluable community resource for neglected area animals and the humans whose lives they enrich. Plus we are, on balance, a pet-crazed population of crafters at Spun, and we like to keep things local whenever we can.
Please join us this season to celebrate with Alex and to take some time away from your holiday stress! (This show, by the way, also offers you the perfect chance to plan something you can make for yourself after the turn of the year!)
Wear black to the reception on December 16, or bring along a picture of your pet to show Alex, and you will be invited to enter our drawing for a door prize at 6:00! You must be present to win.
